Give As You Earn (GAYE)

Charitable giving with tax advantages for the individual.

The University operates a Give As You Earn (GAYE) scheme through the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). The scheme enables employees to make charitable donations via the payroll and, because of the special tax status of such schemes, these donations attract tax relief at the employee's highest marginal rate.

"The thing I love most about the scheme is the ability to make an immediate impact."
Jamie Morris

The mechanics are relatively simple. Individuals can give as much as they want through the scheme and can choose one of three options:

  • An employee can nominate a charity or group of charities to benefit from his or her monthly donation. The contribution is deducted from salary and the CAF forwards the donations to the charity(ies) concerned.
  • Employees who give more than £10 per month, can pay donations into a 'Personal Charity Account' with CAF. This account acts like a bank account and comes with a charity card and special charity 'chequebook' enabling employees to give to any charity at any time.
  • Employees can group together and pool their donations to form a 'staff charity fund' which has the chequebook facility.

The CAF takes 4% of each donation with a minimum of 25p to cover administration.

"Signing up to be a part of our payroll giving programme was an easy thing to do."
