Scam Emails and Phishing

Oxford University Computing Services is currently dealing with five to ten email accounts a week that have been compromised by people replying to emails asking for their username or password, a practice known as 'phishing'. This costs the University time and money to clear up and, in severe cases, your identity may be stolen or your email account used to send out hundreds of thousands of junk emails in your name.

To avoid this, please never:

  • Respond to emails asking for login details
  • Click on any web links in emails that are not from a trusted source
  • Reveal your password to anyone (remember, IT staff will never ask you to reveal your password)

If you have any doubts as to the legitimacy of an email or website, please do not reply or enter your password and report it to phishing@it.ox.ac.uk.

For more information regarding fake or phishing emails, please refer to the phishing page on the IT Services website.
